With traditional means of supporting private education changing very rapidly, the University of La Verne has recently come up with an innovative way to help underwrite its cost.
ULV Productions, Inc., was incorporated in July 1981, after a one and-a-half year trial period. It was set up to give students a hands-on experience with television production techniques. This production company enables students majoring in television production to receive internships in the field, thereby giving them a chance to meet people and work with the necessary equipment in the field to establish real connections.
“This is an attempt to bridge the gap between academic concerns and the larger community of business and technology,” said Bill McGarigle, executive producer of ULV Productions, Inc. McGarigle has been instrumental in developing ULV Productions, an independent production company of the University of La Verne.
ULV Productions is already paying for itself. In its first four months in existence, the company has earned as much as the Television Department did in the past two years.
ULV Productions has recently made its first release entitled, “Redevelopment – A Tale of New Cities,” narrated by Steve Allen, which will air on KCET-TV Channel 28, Tuesday, Dec. 1. It has also just completed a half hour documentary on wind energy for the National Energy Research and Information Institute, as part of a pro posed nationwide science curriculum for secondary schools.
ULV Productions’ clients include NBC’s “On Campus,” Dave Bell and Associates; City of Commerce Redevelopment Agency; the Ascot Raceway; and the Office of the Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools, just to name a few. Those who were most instrumental in getting ULV Productions, Inc., off the ground are Adrian Joseph, producer-writer; Ruby Montano, production coordinator; Susan Hoskins, production coordinator; and Koslan Zoller, production consultant.
ULV Productions, Inc., expects its first interns to enter the program during the 1982 spring semester.
