The new school year is upon us and with that, many of the clubs on campus are getting set for a great number of activities. The Associated Students Federation, ASF, is among those organizations with activities planned, as well as being responsible for many other departmental activities.
As of the start of this semester, ASF has been led by President Pro-Tem, Rose Mangahis, who is the Forum’s vice president. Last year a president was not elected, so she has been responsible for those duties, as well as her own. Along with Mangahis, on the ASF Forum are: Board of Trustees Representative, Pattie Moreno; Accountant, Scott Mac Kay; Secretary, Aaron Kiel and Publicity Director, Ana Avalos. At the end of this month, however, another election will be held to elect a President, new student representative, transfer student representative and three Forum members.
The ASF Forum budget is made possible by a percentage of undergraduate students’ tuition, and the Forum is the governing body at ULV. It is made up of 20 student members who represent the student body. Their goal is “to provide services that will make the students’ college years here at ULV enjoyable.”
“In ASF, it is our job to take the students’ money and give them something in return, such as the dances, dinners, Earth Day, Homecoming, Intramurals and the use of the ASF Macintosh computers and fax machine,” said Mac Kay.
As in a number of organizations, the Forum has experienced some changes. One of those changes came about when they took on the Inter-Organization Council’s responsibilities. IOC is taking this year to go through a period of restructuring therefore, ASF will be in charge of allocating all funds for clubs and activities. Sept. 19 is the deadline for all departments requesting funds for activities.
ASF encourages all students to get involved. Students can join the various planning committees, attend and participate in ASF sponsored activities, such as “Fun Flicks” on Sept. 23. “Fun Flicks” gives students an opportunity to create their very own music video. Students wanting to get involved with ASF can also attend the weekly meetings and vote in the upcoming elections.
The office is located in the back of the Student Center and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
