The University of La Verne cross country team took part in the SCIAC eight-way meet at La Mirada Park last Saturday.

The eight-way meet is different from most meets in the way the final standings are tallied. The standings are based on the top five runners of a team. The team with the best five times win the meet.

The men’s team ran well enough to take fourth place. Sophomore Gilbert Gomez was the men’s top finisher, placing 14th overall with a time of 27:54. Junior Brian Ward came in behind Gomez with a time of 28:12 to take 18th overall.

“The team ran well. They gave a great effort,” said Assistant Coach Chris Klaes.

The women’s team was led by sophomore Jill Perkins, who placed 15th with a time of 19:55. Kelly Perkins finished 24th overall. The team placed sixth in the standings.

The women’s team was without its number two runner, Monica Patino, due to prior commitments on her part.

“We hope having her in our next meet will help us,” said Klaes.

The eight-way meet counts as 50 percent of the final league standings. The other 50 percent will be decided at the SCIAC Championships on Oct. 29 at El Prado Park in Chino.
