Having played two games this season the University of La Verne women’s basketball team has a 1-1 record.
The women dropped their first game on Nov. 22 to Point Loma University, 88-85. “We did not get intense until the second half,” said Head Coach Julie Kline.
Last Saturday the women rebounded from their opening loss to beat Christian Heritage College, 87-53.
“We were intense the whole game, and our transition game was strong,” said Kline.
The big turn around was attributed to the team being able to work on game situations while in practice. “Having one game under our belt helped us a lot,” said Kline.
The women’s team hopes to keep improving as the season roles on.
Recruiting was stressed during the off season.“We were fortunate to get some good players,” said Kline. Division one transfer Leslee Rogers and freshman Laura Czingula are a couple to name a few. Lori McGhee, Tiffany Hall and Rachell Auld are the top returners.
Coach Kline has a little help coaching this year. Jennifer Manfredi is a first year graduate assistant at La Verne.
“She is very enthusiastic and brings ideas to the team,” said Kline of Manfredi.
“We will take each game one by one. The parity in the conference is unbelievable. The teams with the fewest mistakes wi1l be on top,” said Kline.
Fans of the Leos can expect to see a high scoring, fast breaking offense and a smothering defense with a lot of pressure.
The women play in the Pacific Christian Tournament tonight and tomorrow. The first game will at 8 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton.
