Students who are interested in finding out what companies are looking for in an employee or if they just want to make contacts in their chosen field then Career Day is for them.
The Career Development Center (CDC) is sponsoring Career Day 1995 on Tuesday, March 14, in the Quad from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“It’s a day of information sharing,” said Terrie Lopez, coordinator of career placement.
Career Day is for students to find out about different companies they might be interested in working for someday.
“I’m going to look at what careers I’d like to pursue and what companies are looking for,” said sophomore Joseph Martinez.
Freshman and sophomores might find out what type of company they would like to work at.
According to Lopez, juniors may want to ask the different companies about internships and how to apply for them.
Seniors can ask about job opportunities at the companies that interest them and ask about how to and where to apply for those positions.
“Students of all class levels should come and participate,” said Lopez.
Seniors may also want to take a few resumés to pass out. Those who do are advised to dress professionally, but nice student dress is OK for all other students who participate.
“I’m looking for knowledge about different companies, who’s hiring and what positions are available,” said senior La Tasha Williams.
It is a way to make contacts in one’s major field and to start networking.
According to Lopez, the companies that participate come for many reasons, ranging from maintaining visibility on campus to providing company information to students.
There are already 40 companies participating from various majors.
Career Day offers the chance to learn about career opportunities, get leads on openings, pick up company literature and gain insight on work environments.
Some of the companies participating are: Advance Infant Development, American Express Financial Advisors, Becker CPA/CMA Review, Bethany Theological Seminary, California Highway Patrol, Camp Max Strauss, Camp Paivika/Camp Joan Mier, Covina-Valley Unified School District, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Farmer’s Insurance Group, Internal Revenue Service, ITT Hartford, KABC-TV Channel 7, L.A. College of Chiropractic Medicine, L.A. County Probation Department, L.A. Police Department, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, McKinley Children’s Center, Merrill Lynch, National Labor Relations Board, The New England, Northwestern Mutual Life, Olympic Personnel Services, Pacific Lodge Boys’ Home, Prototypes Women’s Center, Raging Waters, Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), Rialto Unified School District, ULV College of Law, ULV Graduate Education Department, United Airlines, United States Coast Guard, and United States Peace Corps.
