Saturday morning’s fog brought the ULV women’s tennis team onto the courts to face Caltech in a match that the Leopards lost 7-2.

This second league match was a challenge because the team has such a diverse group of talent.

Coach Wendy Zwissler sized up the women’s team in one sentence, “We have experienced players and players who have never played before,” she said.

Players for this season’s singles teams in order include: Misha Kellogg number one seed, Wendy Dawson, Claudia Estrada, Wendy Rockenbaugh, Jacqui Zwissler, Tiffany Hall, and Jenny Zwissler.

The doubles teams include: Kellogg, and Dawson, Estrada and Jenny Zwissler, and Tiffany Hall with Jacqui Zwissler.

The game was a challenge for the new players who decided to compete in the Feb. 25 match against Caltech, the new players, Hall, Rockenbaugh, and the Zwissler sisters also compete in soccer and basketball.

Wins for the Leos in singles matches were clenched by Kellogg and Dawson.

Kellogg beat Monica Sharman of Caltech 7-5, and 6-1. Caltech’s Lena Petrovic gave Dawson visibly good competition but Dawson was able to prevail with scores of 6-3, 1-6, and 6-3.

Caltech put up a really good fight and their perseverance gave them the match. Final scores for doubles play included, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7 for the Sharman, Johnson team of Caltech against the Kellogg, Dawson team.

Estrada and Jenny Zwissler finished 0-6, 0-6 against Petrovic and Fujimoto of Caltech.

New players Hall and Jacqui Zwissler made a team effort against Verhoff and Yang but came up short, 4-6, and 3-6 overall.

Even though league play has them off to a rough start, the women’s tennis team is working together on and off the court. This visible commitment in itself should bring them a very successful season.

The ultimate goal for the 1995 season by Coach Zwissler is, “To play the best we can.”

Women’s tennis travels to Cal Lutheran tomorrow at 2 p.m. On Tuesday they will play at Whittier to makeup last Wednesday’s rained out match.
