Department students win honors

Students from the University of La Verne Communications Department won a total of eight awards at the 47th Annual California Intercollegiate Press Association (CIPA) convention, held at San Diego State last weekend.

In the mail-in awards competition, covering work done in 1994, KULV Sports Director Vince Wetzel won both second and third place in the Best Radio Sports Play-by-Play category for his broadcasts of ULV football vs. Chapman and St. John’s.

Ivan Matsumoto took home first place honors for Best Magazine Cover for his cover portrait of international student Despina Vassiliadou. La Verne Mag­a­zine Editor in Chief Monica Schwarze won third place in the Best Magazine Human Interest Story category for her story, “Doing Breakfast the Barkley Way.” Former La Verne Magazine Editor Maureen Garretson won third place for Best Magazine News Story for “Amer­asians: Throwaway Children” and Senior Yasuyuki Nagasawa received third place honors for Best Magazine Art/Graphics.

In the on-site competitions, Campus Times Editorial Director Amy Borer was the first place winner in the news writing competition, while Schwarze won third place in feature writing.

Cummings takes journalistic approach to memoir

Valerie Cummings, associate professor of broadcast journalism, shared her journey of writing a memoir about the challenging and transformative year leading to the adoption of her daughter, now 24, during the faculty lecture series Tuesday in the Quay Davis Executive Board Room.
