Student employment specialist, Moore, retires

After 13 years at the University as Student Employment Specialist, Jean Moore will retire at the end of this year to relax, spend time with her grandchildren and start volunteering again.

“I look forward to returning to a very active life with my grandchildren, my church and community,” said Moore.

She has three daughters and seven grandchildren.

She calls herself a “story teller” and she plans to take this time to write the stories down to pass on to her family.

Moore will move to Pilgrim Place, an active retirement community for church leaders and Christian workers, in Claremont in the early summer.

Being the wife of a minister and faculty member of the seminary in Claremont, Moore was eligible to live in this community.

“I’m very excited that I will be able to live there,” she said.

She was informed in February that there was a place for her at Pilgrim Place and has been waiting until early summer to move in.

Before coming to La Verne, Moore worked at Casa Colina Hospital and received her business and teaching degrees from Baylor University in Texas.

She started working as a personnel specialist and has always worked in student employment.

When the University started to receive more federal funds, Moore took on the full-time job as student employment specialist.

“I like working with people rather than paper work,” she said.

During her tenure, Moore was given the opportunity to develop the student employment program.

“I felt the importance of student employment can be a very important part of one’s educational experience and training,” she said.

She feels that everything in life is a learning experience.

When she knew what she wanted in a student employment program, Moore contacted Dr. Carmel Marti Day, director of health services management, to help develop the student workers’ handbook and seminars.

“She [Dr. Day] has helped in every way to stimulate my thinking through the years,” said Moore.

She likes working with the students and departmental supervisors and says she will miss the people at ULV.

Moore’s office has physically moved many times before it’s present location in Woody Hall—one of those locations was the kitchen in the International Student House.

She says the greatest honor that she received here at La Verne was being the Grand Marshall of the 1989 Home­com­ing parade.

She hopes to still be involved with the University in the future, she does not want to lose touch with the La Verne community.

There will be a farewell reception for Moore on Friday, May 19, from 2-4 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room.
