Men’s soccer ends tied with Oxy, 1-1

With the final game just a day away, the University of La Verne men’s soccer team played against Occidental on Tuesday, resulting in a 3-3 tie.

The game was scoreless through the first half, but senior Juan Contreras came into the second half ready to win.

With 31 minutes on the clock, Contreras kicked the first goal for the Leos. And 56 seconds later, he kicked the second goal for the team, giving the Leos a 2-0 lead.

Occidental rallied and, with 21:20 on the clock, Occidental’s Carlos Tovello scored for the Tigers. Jack Anders of Occidental scored next and tied the game with 16 minutes left.

Neither side could score again in regulation and the game entered overtime. In the first half of overtime, with nine minutes left, senior forward Kevin Willmore scored for the Leos.

The second half of overtime left the Leos scoreless, but Occidental’s Chad Jenkins scored a goal for the Tigers.
The game ended after two hours and 45 minutes, with no winner and no loser.

“We should have won this game. We played good. We just fell asleep at the end,” said Contreras.

“I was pretty impressed with the team. We all gave a lot,” said Willmore.

The Leos are 3-11-1 overall and 1-6-1 in SCIAC.

They play tonight against Colorado College and tomorrow against Caltech. Both games are at home.

“We’ll try our best against Colorado on Friday. We learned a lot about ourselves tonight and we should learn a lot from Colorado,” added Willmore. “We should end the season on a positive note Saturday.”

Head Coach Owen Wright said the team “had it won a couple of times and they played as well as they have all year.”

Wright said the team would have done better all season if more players from the previous year’s team had returned.

“It’s a young team,” Wright said. “We only have one player, Willie Sinon, who has been playing his whole four years. There are only four seniors playing. I can’t predict who’ll be back. It’s not like it use to be.”

He said most of the men from last year’s team did not return because of academics or because they had to work. But he added some men did not return to the school because of financial aid problems.
