University honors Jang for service to southern China

It is that time of year again—spring registration is here, and there is a frenzy among those students to meet with their advisers. Dr. John Jang, professor of history and government, is one of a handful of people who was recognized recently at the 10th anniversary celebration for Wuyi University in southern China.

Dr. Jang traveled to China for a week in mid-October to attend the celebration. He received a silver plate depicting all of the buildings of the University, with the date of the celebration and the name of the University engraved on it.

“I didn’t expect to be recognized, but I am very honored,” said Dr. Jang.

He has been a senior adviser for the University since it was established in 1985.

The University, which is located in Jiangmen, near Hong Kong, is what Dr. Jang calls a “semi-private/semi-public” university.

Universities in China are usually funded by the central government and Wuyi is one of the first universities that is funded by private sources as well as the government.

Wuyi is the same University where ULV students study abroad in China.

In 1985, Dr. Jang was asked to advise in the curricular development of the Social Sciences Department for Wuyi University. For the last 10 years, he has given speeches and led seminars at the University.

His speeches have been on such topics as US/China relations and the Chinese-American culture. He has lead seminars on topics including international trade and US/China trade relations. He also led a seminar on American reactions to the Tian An Men Square incident which occurred in 1989.

Dr. Jang has been at ULV for 29 years teaching political science and history. He is also the faculty adviser for Model United Nations.
