Starting off its season unsuccessfully, the University of La Verne men’s tennis team lost to Caltech on Feb. 10 and to Occidental on Feb. 14.
Against Occidental, sophomore Andrew Nguyen and junior Aung Wun both scored two victories for the Leos. Wun won by default.
Nguyen played singles winning both times, 6-1 and 6-3.
Sophomore Sergio Velazquez and Xavier Unamun also gave the Leopards a point for the team.
The first set they won, 6-4. They lost the second set, 4-6, and they also won the last game, 7-6.
“We should do much better this year because we are much more organized. With more practices during the week, we are getting better,” Wun said after the match.
Struggling for victory last Saturday, the Leopards lost to Caltech 7-2, playing a total of nine matches.
Opening up for the Leos first win, Junior Kris Holland won a match that was 6-3 and 6-2.
Freshman David Dang also defeated the Beavers in his singles match with scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
Velazquez and Dang were partners playing doubles, but they ended up losing their match.
“We should’ve won. It was a devastating loss. We really should’ve won the last set because we were so close to victory,” said Velazquez.
The majority of the team was not pleased at all by losing their first match of the season.
However, this loss has not put a damper on Coach Tim Fitzgerald’s enthusiasm.
“With a stronger team this year, I’m looking forward to a better season,” he said.
The team will play today at Chapman at 2 p.m. and host Whittier tomorrow at 2 p.m.
