After a week of touring central California, the University of La Verne Chamber Singers returned for a homecoming concert at the Holy Name of Mary Parish in San Dimas Tuesday night.
The Chamber Singers, directed by Music Department Chair Bruce Hirsch and accompanied by Adjunct Music Professor Anita Hanawalt, a pianist, performed in Bakersfield, Modesto, Laton and spent a day in San Francisco while on tour.
“The kids were a lot more nervous tonight then they were for the other shows because we were performing in front of an audience of our friends and family, but they were also very excited,” said Marjorie Hirsch, adjunct music professor.
Included in the concert were selections by Mozart, J.S. Bach, Hopson and Sleeth that represented a mixture of classical, spiritual and sacred styles.
The program also featured several comedic solos and duets, including a duet performed by senior Skip Sams and junior Ray Garza about two gambling men in love with the same woman.
The last song in the concert, written by Dr. Jester Hairston, featured solos by seniors Isela Griffith, DiShawn Givens and David Wingfield and warned about the evils and hazards of gossip.
“It’s great to be able to perform in front of our friends and in our community,” said freshman Lisa Manley.
