Mueller joins Student Affairs staff at La Verne

Students will be seeing new faces around campus. One is Kate Mueller who has taken on a newly developed position as coordinator of student development programs.

This position allows Mueller the responsibility of coordinating LEAD (Leader­ship Education and Develop­ment), and starting next fall she will also coordinate the Senior Retreat, OWLs (Orient­ation Week Leaders), Uni­versity 100 and Freshmen Orientation.

Before this position was given to Mueller, there was a different coordinator for each activity.

Mueller said she relies on the OWLs and instructors to teach the University 100 courses. As for LEAD, Mueller wants to improve the program.

“The programs here are good, but I hope to improve them even more,” she said.

Mueller grew up in Arizona and after she graduated from high school, she attended Scripps College in Claremont. Despite leaving Arizona for school, she was “happy to get out of the heat,” also.

Mueller heard about the open position from Derek Vergara, director of housing and residential life, and is enjoying her new job.

“I want to make sure the freshmen are excited about ULV and want to stay,” she said of her intent to make students happy.

Before coming to the University of La Verne, Mueller worked at UC Irvine for six and a half years. Prior to that she worked at Concordia University for four years.

Mueller finished up her course work at Cal State Long Beach for her master’s degree in counseling, specializing in student development in higher education. She is in the process of completing her master’s thesis in hopes to be done by December. Ten years from now she hope to have a doctorate in education.

Now she is a full-time administrator at ULV. All of the programs that Mueller is coordinating somehow interact with one another. She enjoys working with students because they keep her energized.

Mueller has been married for about nine years to Tim and they have no kids, but she enjoys spending time with her nieces. During her spare time she loves to read a variety of different novels, both fiction and non-fiction, and even historical books. She normally chooses her books depending on her mood.

A little advice from Mueller to the students is to get involved and take full advantage of their college years.
