An umbrella sorority organization is coming to the University of La Verne.
In December, Phi Sigma Sigma received its charter from its national headquarters. Because there are now two national sororities on campus, a Panhellenic council must be formed, according to sorority guidelines.
This organization is called the National Panhellenic Conference, which is composed 26 national sororities.
“Together this is the governing body of all the national sororities,” said Melissa Jaunal coordinator of student programs.
This organization has a rule that says when there are two or more national sororities on a campus, all sororities on campus must form a collegiate Panhellenic association, according to Jaunal.
“The point of Panhellenic is to bring the sororities together for a common purpose,”she said.
The main purpose of the Panhellenic council at this time is for sorority rush. This will help the rush process be more organized.
Panhellenic is not designed to destroy or compete with the Inter-Fraternity Sorority Council (IFSC) in any way. Rather, it will provide better sorority relations.
Plans for the organization will be up and running soon. At present, the women are in the process of drawing up the constitution. Their goal is have it settled by rush week, Feb. 23-28.
