Animation Festival

The first World Animation Celebration will take place in Pasadena’s Civic Auditorium, 300 E. Green St., and adjacent venues March 24-29. Its goal is to bring aficionados and professionals together in celebration of the art and industry of animation.

Movies

Opening in general release today is “Selena.” Actress Jennifer Lopez portrays the life and death of the slain Tejano singer. Edward James Olmos also stars as Selena’s father.

Jim Carrey is on-screen once more in his new movie “Liar, Liar.” The film deals with the relationship of a son and his father, a compulsive liar. Maura Tierney and Meg Tilly also star.

Grand Opening

Edwards Cinemas will hold a grand opening today through Sunday at its new Edwards Ontario 22 with IMAX 3-D Theatre at Ontario Mills.

In celebration of the event, the cinema will offer free popcorn and soda for everyone throughout the weekend.

In addition, ticket purchases made from March 21-23 will entitle the holder to a $1 discount at the Edwards IMAX 3-D theatre upon its grand opening March 28.

Commentary: Remembrance of a Dodgers legacy

At 11 a.m. on Nov. 3, Mariachi Plaza was flooded with a wave of Dodger blue. A 52-foot tall mural of Fernando Valenzuela gazed down on the city of Los Angeles. An ofrenda for El Toro sat just beneath the mural, celebrating his life. The smell of incense was strong throughout First Street.

The pitch black sky above the Hollywood Bowl was illuminated by green, purple and pink glow sticks. Screams from approximately 18,000 adoring fans pierced the night.
