Local joints provide nourishment

Is anybody hungry? How about trying one of The Bagelry’s hottest items, a pumpkin bagel? The Bagelry is located at the corner of Foothill and D Street in La Verne and is known for its seasonal and holiday bagels.

Not only does it serve plain bagels and cream cheese, but a variety of different types of bagels, desserts, sandwiches, pizza, bagel dogs, wraps and cream cheeses. There are seven different types of spreads that are available to choose from. They include: plain, strawberry, blueberry, herb, sun dried tomato, pumpkin and sweet nut.

Junior Michelle Smith, a frequent customer, said, “Cranberry bagels and plain bagels with strawberry cream cheese are two of my favorites. I like it because it fills you up. There is hardly any fat and it is really convenient.”

The Bagelry is owned by Dave and Susan Bughelli. The husband and wife team owns two Bagelrys in the area, and is in the process of opening a new restaurant on Baseline Road and Mountain Avenue in Upland.

The one that students at the University of La Verne are probably most familiar with is the one on Foothill Boulevard.

The Bagelry opened in December 1995 and has already been awarded “1997 Winner Best of the Inland Valley.”

The reason that The Bagelry is so popular is that they serve real New York bagels.

“We bake real New York bagels with no preservatives, all fresh and natural,” said Sergio Herrara, baker and assistant manager.

The bakers must arrive at the restaurant by 2:30 a.m. to prepare the bagels and to be ready for the morning rush of people. Breakfast is the busiest time of the day for the Bagelry. The restaurant opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday and closes at 8 p.m. On the weekends it opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The best seller for The Bagelry is the sandwich called Simply Turkey. It includes turkey, sprouts, and tomatoes. There is a choice of any bagel to put it on.

Junior Leslie Woods said, “I like that Simply Turkey.”

There are many regulars that go to The Bagelry for its unique taste including faculty and students.

“We have customers that come every week from San Diego to get bagels,” said George Gonzalez, manager.

Gonzalez has been working at The Bagelry for two years and enjoys it very much.

“It is enjoyable to get to know a lot of people,” said Gonzalez. “The most important thing is customer service.”

Customer service is one aspect that The Bagelry says it looks well upon. That is why they have decided to begin delivery.

“You are going to see bagels from The Bagelry everywhere. We are starting to deliver bagels to coffee shops and other places,” said Gonzalez.

The University of La Verne might be one of the prospects to enjoy The Bagelry’s delivery service.

The Bagelry also serves many different gourmet coffees and other drinks. There are about 25 vendors that deliver to The Bagelry. These vendors bring anything from drinks to produce.

The Bagelry also has souvenirs for sale. It sells t-shirts and hats in a variety of colors. The price is $ 7.95 for either.

Now that the hunger is subsided and there is a need for something to wash down that delicious bagel and coffee or a soda just will not do, how about walking next door and trying a specialty juice from the Juice Stop?

The Juice Stop offers a variety of fresh squeezed juices, including orange, as well as carrot, V8 and wheatgrass.

They specialize in fruit smoothies and protein shakes, that are low in fat. There are 30 different types of smoothies to choose from.

There are 13 nutrients to choose from to put in the drink. All smoothies include two nutrients and any extra is 35 cents each.

The Mango Smoothy is junior Cecilia Torres’ favorite.

“I like it because it is healthy and because they put ingredients [nutrients] in it,” she said.

Torres visits the Juice Stop about five times a month, she said, “It’s expensive but it is worth it.”

The Juice Stop is owned by three people: Karen Mountain, who is also the manager, Susan Jesperson, who is the chain owner, and a family friend of the Mountains, Brian Healy.

The first Juice Stop opened four years ago by Jesperson in Lake Forest. It became popular fast and there are now nearly 120 nationwide franchises. The closest store, that we are all familiar with opened in late March. It was the 49th Juice Stop to open.

The best seller at any Juice Stop is known as the “Half Nelson.” It includes raspberry, bananas, oranges, strawberries and sherbet.

“The Half Nelson is apparently the most popular,” said sophomore Jeremy Houska. “I always get it with Ginseng in it.”

“The Half Nelson is the most popular at every Juice Stop,” said Mountain.

“I like the Juice Stop because it tastes good and is nutritious,” said Houska.

The Wheatgrass shot has also become extremely popular. It is 70 percent chlorophyll and it increases the body’s resistance to illness. It has 17 amino acids, and 92 of 102 minerals.

“One shot gives you the nutrients of 10 salads or two pounds of vegetables. It also helps you sleep better,” said Mountain.

The Juice Stop also has a variety of different health treats, that Mountain gets from vendors, distributors, or her own shopping at Costco. Even though the Juice Stop is a chain, Mountain feels it is necessary to add her own touch.

“We also have frozen bananas and strawberries that are very good,” said Mountain.

The Juice Stop also has gift certificates in $3, $5 and $10 increments.

So, if students are hungry and sick of all the fast food, make just one stop at the Bagelry and the Juice Stop.

“Sometimes you are so full from the Juice Stop that you can’t eat anything else,” said Smith.

“People who are interested in good health choose the Bagelry and us,” said Mountain. “Plus we are just good.”
