Work stalled on new Education building

Construction on the new Education Department building, formerly known as the Kilo Building, has been halted, with its future depending on a new budget figure to be released by early November.

Renovations were stopped at the framing stage in order to help balance the 1996-97 budget. These improvements will not go on until the University finds adequate funding in its budget.

“We have plans to completely refurbish the Kilo Building for the Education Department,” said President Stephen Morgan, “but we also have to remain within the school’s budget and completing the renovations at this time would not be meeting the revenue suggestions.”

Currently, the Education Department says it needs more space.

Education Department Chair Dr. Thomas McGuire said, “We have a space problem, and we need more office and classroom space.”

The renovations of the Kilo Building will create a building solely for the use of the Education Department. This will also create more office and classroom space for the Biology and Chemistry departments, which occupy the Mainiero Building along with Education.

ULV is a tuition-based revenue school, meaning the greater the number of enrolled students, the more revenue to add to the budget. Although undergraduate enrollment is slightly lower than last year, the graduate and off-campus enrollments has increased this year.

Construction could resume next semester if the numbers are right, otherwise the school will have to wait for the next fiscal year to re-evaluate the cost of construction and see if it is within 1998-99 budget.
