In 1998 the University of La Verne women’s tennis team has a large number of upper class-men. There are four seniors, one junior and and one freshman.
“I lost 4-out-of-5 top players and I am starting from scratch,” said La Verne head coach Erin Hendricks.
There are three returners: seniors Emily Judd and Sandy Thay and junior Pauline Duran.
Freshman Tara Ervin, seniors Xochitl Martinez and Amy Vanschoelandt round out the rest of the team.
“Our strength is our work ethic,” said Hendricks.
The Leopards may be hard working, but according to Hendricks, the team will not fare as well this season.
La Verne’s first match was scheduled for Friday, Jan. 6 against Biola University. That match was rained out and there is no make up scheduled at this point.
The Leopards will face tough competition this season. The team plays perennial Division III and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference powerhouses Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (today at 2 p..m.), and Pomona-Pitzer (Feb. 21).
March will be a tough month for La Verne as they host Vassar (March 11), Mills College (March 13, New Mexico (March 14) and Azusa (March 15) before playing in the Mills College Invitational in Northern California, April 5-6.
