Dan Mulville becomes head men’s coach; Hartman assists

Entering the 1998 season, Dan Mulville will be stepping up from assistant to head coach for the men’s basketball team after former head coach Terry Boesel resigned last May.

After a three year stay at the University of La Verne, Boesel accepted an offer to serve as an assistant coach for a Division I school, the University of San Diego.

Athletic Director Jim Paschal said, “We had enough time to hire anyone we saw fit for the job. Mulville was responsible for recruiting the returners we have now and for recruiting the new group of players, so we felt he deserves an opportunity for the position.”

The decision of hiring Mulville as coach was made by Paschal and Assistant Athletic Director Rex Huigens. Paschal said that the decision was “quite simple.”

“Once I found out that Terry was leaving, I told Jim Paschal that, ‘I want an interview. I want the head coaching position,'” said Mulville, who is also ULV’s sports information director.

Having had a strong season showing last year, the team and the program will not be seeing any changes as far as work ethic.

Mulville, exuberant about the coaching transition, said, “We won a lot of games last year, so there is no reason why anything should be changed.”

To help him in an effort of another successful season, Mulville hired ULV alumni Nick Hartman (’94) and Gabe Duran (’98) as assistant coaches.

“It is good Dan was given the opportunity for head coach because he knows the players and the program,” said returning guard, senior Chad Duggins. “As players, we don’t need to adapt to the styles of a new coach.”
