For 90 minutes, the University of La Verne women’s soccer team battled the University of Redlands to a 4-4 end-of-regulation tie on the heated Ben Hines Field Saturday.
And after 30 minutes of sudden death overtime, the Leopards were left with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tie.
Freshman midfielder Erica Borbon scored the Leopards’ game-tying goal in the 83rd minute on a pass from sophomore forward Rachel Lieberman on a free kick, as La Verne improved to 7-5-1 overall on the season and 5-2-1 in SCIAC.
Trailing 2-1 in the first half, the Leopards were putting pressure on the Bulldogs’ defense. La Verne finally found a crack in the Redlands back field when, with nine seconds to play before the half, sophomore midfielder Katie Zwissler, on a pass from senior defender Alicia Raygoza, scored ULV’s second goal.
The 2-2 tie lasted until Redlands forward Cristina Romero put home a rebound off La Verne freshman goalie Kim Schrepfer with 39 minutes to play.
Fourteen minutes later, La Verne answered back on freshman middle fielder Tonia Noujaim’s scoring strike with the assist going to freshman midfielder Heather Cooper.
The Leopards had a chance to take the lead with 16 minutes left, but Lieberman kicked wide left on an open goal. Two minutes later, Redlands forward Aurora Romans headed a shot over Schrepfer for a 4-3 Bulldogs lead.
On Wednesday, ULV fell to Cal Lutheran 2-0, and La Verne’s record took a plunge to 7-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in SCIAC.
The Regals took a 2-0 lead before the half, and the Leopards were unable to get back into the game.
ULV plays at Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 11 a.m.
