Athletic Hall of Fame welcomes 7 members

How does it feel to be inducted into the University of La Verne’s Hall of Fame?

On Saturday, Feb. 20, the University of La Verne Athletic Department added seven new names to the ranks of ULV coaching legends Dwight Hanawalt, Rex Huigens and Roland Ortmayer

The Sixth Annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner and ceremony was held at the Sheraton Suites Fairplex in Pomona.

“It is an incredible honor and a real shock to be put in the same caliber of those who have gone before me,” said inductee Sandi Iverson (’73). Iverson played basketball, softball and volleyball while attending ULV.

“People like Dwight Hanawalt and Roland Ortmayer were teachers when I was going to La Verne,” Iverson said.

These seven former student-athletes made a name for themselves as some of the top athletes to attend ULV.

These people were not only recognized for their athletic abilities, however. Their efforts in their communities and in their churches were also factors in determining who would be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Kirk Dean (’87), Dayton Dickey (’39), Michele Galagar (’87), Anthony Grove (’89), Bruce Hines (’80), Iverson and Anthony Scafani (’39) have become role models for ULV students.

Their accomplishments show students that they can reach their goals.

“Keep your reach beyond your grasp,” said Dickey, who played basketball and football, and encourages all ULV students to do more than average. “Set high goals and even higher standards.”
