Campus Ministry holds flea market

The University of La Verne Campus Ministry held a free flea market on Saturday in the University Mall near the Chapel in hopes of helping those less fortunate and at the same time providing a chance for the community to come together.

The event allowed people to grab one bag each and fill it with clothing, books and other donated goods. The contributions were made by students, faculty and staff at La Verne and some local churches.

“There is a lot of need in our community,” said Protestant Campus Minister Debbie Roberts, who was in charge of organizing the event.

Roberts pointed out that every day children are discouraged from going to school because they do not have nice clothes to wear and that this causes low self-esteem and grades that decline from their absences.

“Every year is always moving, we get a lot of gratitude from the people that come and the community,” said Roberts.

The annual flea market was started four years ago by Campus Ministry and has been held every fall since then. The event has become a success each year, providing useful and helpful merchandise for the people that attend.

Along with the donations, the flea market has also become an event that allows the University and neighborhood communities to become familiar with each other.

“It’s given us a chance to have a relationship with the community,” said Roberts.

Roberts said she has great expectations for future flea markets, “We want our program to grow; we want it to be where we get stores to donate some clothes and we can reach more people, because there is such a need.”

Roberts said she welcomes anyone who is willing to contribute in any way to future flea markets and campus ministry events.

“The idea is to walk one’s talk and get involved with servicing the community,” she said.
