College students know the cost of the university in which they are applying. They realize the cost of food they will need. They can estimate how much money in loans they will need in order to live on campus. All of these expenses are a given when students apply to college. But what comes as a shock to college students is the cost of the required textbooks. A new web site may help curb these costs.

UsedBookBroker.com is a new online site for textbook sales. It differs from many other book web sites like www.amazon.com because the buying and selling takes place directly between students. This system eliminates the middleman, who often reaps a profit from the reselling of textbooks. Most online bookstores only deal with new books. According to the UsedBookBroker website, although the buyer is still receiving a discounted price, the cost is still 90 percent or more of its original price.

The site enables sellers to receive more money back for their textbooks than if they sold them back through their college bookstore. Most campus bookstores will purchase textbooks back for only a fraction of the original cost of the book, which leaves the seller receiving about 10-30 percent of their original expense. Campus bookstores then resell the bought-back books at 75 percent of the new price of the book. UsedBookBroker.com requires a set price on all textbooks sold and bought at 65 percent of the retail price. Therefore students who are selling their books will receive a greater amount of money back, and purchasers will still be buying their books at a discount price.

Payment of the textbooks is handled through UsedBookBroker.com itself, so buyers and sellers do not need to worry about cash transactions.

According to the site, books should arrive within five days after purchase. A book can also be returned for any reason within three days. A complete refund is issued back to the buyer.

After a comparison between UsedBookBroker.com, the University of La Verne Bookstore and Amazon.com, UsedBookBroker offered the lowest price for a College Algebra book. Amazon had the highest price of $87.30. The ULV Bookstore with $66.25 for a used copy and $88.25 for a new copy. UsedBookBroker offered the book at $53.27 and had a copy readily available for purchase.
