The University of La Verne Men’s golf team traveled to Thousand Oaks on Monday to play 36 holes at the Sunset Hills Country Club for the 10th Annual Kingsmen Invitational.
The Leopards freshman Joe Skovron made his mark at the tournament on Monday. Skovron shot a 35 on the front nine, and a 40 on the back making his score after 18, 75. Skovron then stepped it up a notch and on the second 18.
By shooting a 35 on the front nine, and a 34 on the back, he made heads turn. Skovron shot a 69 on his second 18, making his 36 hole total a 144. This put Skovron at second place overall.
Just inching out Skovron was Ryan Higton from Master’s College. Higton shot a 73 on the first 18, and 68 on the second, which totaled 141 on the day.
Other Leopards that stood out were junior Karl Schubert shooting a 74 on both rounds of 18. Placing him at at seventh overall in the tournament.
Freshman Joey Murray was also a standout on Monday shooting a 78 on the front nine and 71 on the back, placing him into a five-way tie for eighth place.
The Leopards overall shutout the competition. La Verne finished second overall, getting inched out by Point Loma Nazarene by only one point.
Other Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams that played in the Kingsmen Invitational were University of Redlands, placing third overall, California Lutheran, placing sixth overall, Pomona-Pitzer College, placing ninth overall, and Whittier College, 14th overall in the final standings.
The golf team will travel to California State Monterrey Invitational at Bayonet Golf Course on March 19 and 20.
The Leopards next SCIAC match will be on March 28 at Empire Lakes against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
