Indoor soccer Intramurals have become a social and athletic event on Thursday nights brought to the University of La Verne by the Associated Students Federation (ASF) Forum.

Played in the Old Gym, ULV Intramurals are designed for athletes and non-athletes to participate in fun, organized and athletic games weekly.

Soccer has become an extremely popular sport amongst ULV Intramural participants and their fans.

There are 10 registered teams that consist of six to nine players each. Each team has its own original name that expresses their individuality and creativity.

The team names are Straight Talent, Dr. Pepper, Pi, Real Markowitz United F.C. (football club), Pomonians, DaKine, Backside Boys, Shlabs and Back in Black.

The teams are made up of ULV collegiate soccer players, students and other University athletes seeking to have a good time and exercise.

“It’s good to see such an interest in Intramurals because it allows students who do not play at the college level to work together and compete as a team,” said junior soccer player Erica Borbon.

The competition intensifies every Thursday night when the teams take the floor. Some of the teams practice before their games, wear uniforms and chant out cheers, while others wait to get on the floor to show their skill.

The Real Markowitz run onto the floor with bright red jerseys that read “Nick’s Place” and are followed by an enormous flag that spells out their team name. They are sponsored by Nick’s Place, located on D Street and La Paloma Restaurant on Foothill Boulevard.

The bleachers are filled with fans and other players there to have a good time and root on the teams.

“This year Intramurals have been more successful than they have been in the past. We have seen a lot more involvement from the student body than in previous years,” said senior Dan Miyashiro, an ASF commissioner.

The winners of the league will receive a T-shirt for their skills in soccer.

Real Markowitz and Dr. Pepper are currently in first place. Junior Flynn Turner leads in goal scoring with a total of 13.

Results, statistics, game times and standings are posted weekly at the Student Center desk in the Supertents.
