ULV athletes take SCIAC honors

As the academic year comes to a close, the athletic teams of ULV also finish their seasons.

To honor those athletes that excelled during the 2000-2001 year, the Athletic Department held its annual Recognition and Awards Banquet Wednesday, May 9.

Athletes, parents, friends and faculty met in the Student Center Gym at 6 p.m. for hors d’oeuvres, recognition and awards. The banquet recognized teams and individual players from the fall, winter and spring semesters that won SCIAC All Conference awards.

In total, ULV athletes took home 61 awards including five player of the year awards, 41 first team awards and 11 second team awards. The Ted Ducey Award was given to senior Kevin Gustafson for his outstanding sportsmanship in basketball.

Amy Brummel and Ryan Winn received honors for first team in women’s volleyball while Adriana Contreras was named second team.

In women’s cross country, Leti Arroyo was named second team and Lucas Neubauer was also second team for the men’s cross country.

The golf team was awarded two first team awards to players Karl Schubert and Joey Murray. Freshman newcomer, Joe Skovron won player of the year.

Football also had a player of the year awarded to D.J. Kolb and two first team awards to Chris Oliver and Jonathan Johnson. Mario Franklin and Randy McGillivry took the honor of second team.

Katie Zwissler and Kelly Black took first team in soccer while Suzie Sateri took second team.

John Steifling won player of the year honors for men’s water polo. In the same sport, Kenny Clements and Stephen Smith took first team while the second team award went to Ian Gratz and Alan Shumway.

In the men’s swim/dive team, Ryan Mac Donald won the 100 breast first team and Jason Walters won first team in the 200IM category.

Six women from the softball team were awarded first team honors. Those players include Augie Torres, Libby Ramos, Mandy Tillema, Kim Schrepfer, Lisa Cheney and Gina Meza, who also won the player of the year award. Katie Tillema and Jackie Russo were named to the second team.

The women’s water polo team had two players make the first team including Maria DeSantis and Jennifer Pacheco. Making the second team was Tandis Morgan.

Women’s and men’s track and field teams collectively had 25 first team awards in various categories. That includes the player of the year award given to Brandon Jones.

In addition to all of the individual awards handed out, ULV also won first place honors in five team sports. Women’s volleyball, men’s water polo, men’s volleyball, men’s track and field and softball beat out all other teams in the SCIAC to take first place standings.
