Are you hungry and looking for a quick, inexpensive snack? Are you tired of the packaged breakfast food at Circle K? Try one of La Verne’s popular breakfast shops, Miss Donuts and Bagel.

Settled in the heart of old town La Verne, Miss Donuts and Bagel offers a variety of choices beyond just donuts and bagels. Some of these choices include croissants, muffins, bagel sandwiches, coffee, juices and frozen coffee drinks.

The shop is run by a small group of women, some of which are related. Mao Nork, an employee at the shop, said her husband’s friend owns the business, but rarely comes in. The shop on the corner of D Street and Bonita is their only location.

Although they predominantly serve breakfast food, Miss Donuts and Bagel is open throughout the day and most of the evening. They open at 4 a.m. and do not close their doors until 9 p.m., making them the last breakfast shop to close in old town La Verne. Nork said they are busy throughout the entire day, but business slows down in the evening.

When the store closes for the night, baking begins for the next day. Although the employees do not bake for the entire night, it does take them several hours to get everything finished.

“It’s a lot of baking!” Nork laughed.

There are several other breakfast shops on D Street, including Some Crust Bakery, Village Inn and Lordsburg Coffee Roasters. Despite all of this competition, Miss Donuts and Bagel does not seem to have a problem attracting customers. Many mornings there is a line extending out the door.

Not only is Miss Donuts and Bagel popular with the La Verne community, but it is also popular with University of La Verne staff and students. Gloria Henley, an employee at the Career Development and Placement Center, often grabs a snack at Miss Donuts.

“They have good food and friendly help,” she said. She chooses to eat at Miss Donuts and Bagel rather than the other local breakfast shops because their selection is larger, they are more convenient and less expensive.

ULV students Armida Espinoza and Alicia Southorn both love Miss Donuts and Bagel.

“The prices are reasonable and it’s a nice place to get a quick bite for breakfast and read the paper,” Espinoza said.

“I eat there all the time,” Southorn said. “They do a good job at catering to the ULV community.”
