The women’s water polo team was met by tough competition as it traveled to Redlands last weekend to take part in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. La Verne came away with four losses and only one win.
La Verne’s highlight on the weekend came with only seconds left in the game against Whittier.
With only three seconds left in the game, and the score tied at six, head coach Tim Hugar called a timeout. The team then executed a quick play where sophomore Renee Moyer assisted Sarah Kelley, who put the game-winning goal in the net to win, 7-6.
“We really wanted to beat Whittier,” Moyer said. “Since we had come off a hard loss, we were really motivated to win.”
The last day of competition brought on another familiar opponent as La Verne took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The game proved to be one of the most competitive, as the score was tied 4-4 until the fourth quarter. It was then in the fourth that CMS put one past La Verne to break the tie and take the win, 5-4.
“The loss against CMS was upsetting for us because we almost had it until they scored in the fourth.” Moyer said.
The first set of games took place April 25 as La Verne experienced one of its worst losses of the weekend from cross-town rival Pomona-Pitzer.
The Leopards were only able to score three goals against the strong Pomona-Pitzer offense that put 10 points on the scoreboard.
On day two, ULV dropped matches to Occidental (7-1) and Redlands (12-5).
“The second day was really hard on us; we tried hard, but just came up short,” said freshman Tiffany Cleveland.
Prior to the tournament, La Verne beat Whittier College, 6-4, April 12. The Leopards entered the tournament with two losses. The first loss came April 13 against Redlands by a score of 9-4, and another loss to Pomona April 16, 10-5.
La Verne finished off the season 3-7 in league play with a 9-16 overall record.
