The La Verne community’s history may be protected thanks to a walking tours program set to start Saturday.
The tours will feature historical sites in the city.
“History is everything (here),” said Galen Beery, a member of the La Verne Historical Society, who is coordinating the Old Town La Verne Historical Walking Tours, in collaboration with Save Old La Verne Environment, or SOLVE.
Beery hopes the tours will generate public interest in the heritage of La Verne, he said.
SOLVE, a sub-committee of the La Verne Historical Society, was initially created to combat commercialization and big business development.
“It was an effort to make the city economically viable for use of land,” said Mayor Jon Blickenstaff.
Initially the tours were going to be free, but the city determined that proceeds from the tours should go directly to the historical society.
“Galen Beery has a colorful way of describing things and blends history and sensitivity perfectly,” Blickenstaff said.
The Historical Society with local homeowners design a marker, or a way to identify historic homes. There are already about 15 markers in place around the city.
