Lip sync is the final word for Greek Week

All of the Greek organizations showed off their spirit and talent in Lip Sync, the final event of Greek Week, in a packed Founders Auditorium Saturday night.

Sigma Kappa won the contest in the closest ever competition, said co-coordinator Jill Hundshamer, only to come out in a three-way tie for the overall title of Greek Week champions with Phi Delta Theta and Iota Delta.

“The energy from all the Greeks was great. There was a great turnout of everyone’s friends and family,” Phi Delta Theta member Brian Ortega said.

The night was full of entertaining acts as each of the groups took the stage and performed select songs that tied into each of their themes. Themes ranged from Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s “King of Pop,” to Phi Delta Theta’s inventive “Year in Review and We’re Back” to Sigma Kappa’s “There’s No Place Like Hollywood.”

The groups were judged on lip syncing ability, originality of theme, evidence of the theme throughout, if there was one person on stage at all times, creativity and time limit.

The night was full of energy, and pride. It was evident all the effort each of the organizations went through choosing a theme, practicing and getting the skits approved.

“All of the organizations represented themselves well,” said Eugene Shang, one of the judges for the event.

The audience saw everything from an impressionistic dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to Prince in a velvet suit to more than one performance of the William Hung version of “She Bangs.”

“I was happy to see the number of participants and the enthusiasm people had for the week,” Hundshamer said. “It was rewarding to see people’s excitement with the amount of work we put into putting it together.”

The winner of Penny Wars, the group philanthropy project and second scoring event of the week, was Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The fundraiser raised $3,329 for the White Cane Society.

“The presentation of the money to the White Cane Society was the best part of the night. More than anything it brings pride and prestige to the University,” Shang said. “It is the embodiment of what Greek life is all about.”
