Often overlooked by students, the University of La Verne health center offers various services for disease and pregnancy testing in addition to information on contraceptives.
STD and HIV testing are performed at the health center if a student experiences symptoms or if a physician advises to do so.
In addition, tests for pregnancy, urinary tract infections and other infections are offered.
A urine test for pregnancy can be performed after two weeks of a missed period. This is usually the method used. However, the center also offers a blood test, which is used to determine how far along the pregnancy is. The blood test can also be used to obtain the result before the girl misses her period.
The center offers various methods of birth control, including condoms, birth control pills and the NuvaRing.
A referral must be made in order to receive female condoms, contraceptive gel or foam, Depo-Provera injections and Norplant.
Women who wish to go on birth control must view five videos and fill out a questionnaire, which takes about 45 minutes.
The pills are $5 a month. The health center offers Mircette, Cyclessa and Lo Ovral.
The emergency contraceptive pill is also available. A pregnancy test is performed and information on the pills is given to the woman prior to receiving the pills.
The Health Center is open for nurse hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
Physician hours from Monday through Thursday are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
