Don Welch, La Verne resident and 1959 La Verne college alumnus, participated in a nationwide vigil held on Thursday at the Rock in remembrance of the 1,014 soldiers who have died since the start of the war in Iraq. Welch served in the First Marine division in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. As a member of the La Verne Church of the Brethren, Welch said he strives “for peace, not war. If we put the same amount of effort towards peace as we do war, we would have a better nation and a better world. Hopefully a statement was made.” The La Verne vigil was organized by Debbie Roberts, campus minister, and Tracy Lee Taylor, a La Verne resident. / photo by Gloria Diaz
