Lack of dead week will kill students’ study time

Unless the University of La Verne administrators want their students to fail or do poorly on their finals, they should really think about their decision to not have the two extra days before finals to study.

This year, ULV students will not have the two days before finals to study.

Finals will begin on a Friday at 7:30 a.m., but many students will still have classes the day before.

This faulty final scheduling is unreasonable. What if the student’s last class ends on Thursday at 10 p.m. and they have a final that starts the next day at 7:30 a.m.? What are they going to do? Are they supposed to come to the final unprepared? Are they now expected to cram for the final during the precious hours that they should spend sleeping?

If this is the case, there are going to be a lot of tired zombies trying to pass their finals this time around.

Last year, many professors were not informed whether or not there would be class. Because they were unsure, there was an inconsistency in class schedules. Some professors ended up holding class while others gave their students the day off. Some professors even teased students into coming to class, warning them that it would be the only way to receive a study guide.

If some students get the two days off then the rest of the students should get those two days off as well. It is unfair because if some of those students have the same final the next day, some will have the advantage because they had the extra days to study. Is that really playing it fair?

Some faculty might not want the extra two days for students to study because they do not want the semester to be longer than it has to be.

Is that extra week of school so unpleasant that they would rather end school early than have their students do well on their finals? If ending school a week early is that important to faculty, then they have to reprioritize their life.

Another reason why some might object to the extra two days is because they figured that some students might not even use the time to study.

Not every student is going to waste the two extra days partying. Do not let a small number of students ruin it for those that do need the study time.

Many of the students actually will use the time to study because they want to do well on their exams.

Some schools have the whole week off before finals, yet we can’t even get two days off? Is the University not taking academics seriously? Do they not want us to do well in school? Do they want to give failing grades?

If the University wants to have a successful student body, then they should rethink the idea of not having two extra days before finals to study.
