Club sells books for Katrina relief

With hurricane relief efforts in mind, the Alliance for Community Enrichment club hosted a book sale Wednesday at the University Mall.

“All money made will go straight to the American Red Cross to support hurricane relief,” said In Lai, senior liberal arts major and ACE club president.

Only three books were sold during the book sale, which lasted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“There were a lot of people passing by during the lunch hour,” Lai said.

Unwanted books from the English department were donated to the club last year. ACE began selling the books through the Internet last year for club fundraising purposes. After Hurricane Katrina, ACE decided to host the book sale for hurricane relief.

English books and other materials coming from the English department included older editions of textbooks, as well as some non-fiction novels relating to grammar and style. ACE club members also donated some books for the book sale.

“It’s not like we need to get rid of them,” Lai said. “They are still good.”

The ACE club is a community service based club that started three years ago.

While not as prominent as other clubs on campus, ACE stays active by having Read Day in the Pomona Library, where club members offer their time to read to children.

The next Read Day will be on Oct. 22.
