I hate Disney movies. Along with their sappy “happily ever after” endings—after learning another one of life’s lessons through death or some other misfortune—Disney movies are unforgivably tiresome. I’ve had enough heartbreak in my life that I don’t need to sit through another one.
On top of that, it seems like the Princess movies are always promoting the male figures and ignoring women’s independence in life. These princesses are always moving from one male figure to the next. In the beginning of the movie, they are a devoted daughter and by the end of the movie, they are a devoted wife. It’s always about winning over their “prince charming” and having some extravagant wedding, like Ariel, Jasmine, Aurora or Belle did. We don’t need another movie that discourages female independence and identity.
Then there are those overrated horror movies that are all about blood and gore. Who wants to pay $10 for tickets and $20 for over-priced snacks to see bits and pieces of a person’s body get cut off or mutilated?
I would much rather get ripped off by the movie theater if I am there for a comedy flick. I’d choose the “laughing so hard I fell out of my seat” movie over the “scared to death I’m hiding behind the seat” movie any time.
For instance, who can ever pass up a classic comedic movie like “Dumb and Dumber”? With Jim Carrey and his hilarious antics, this movie is a win-win situation. There’s also “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.” They are all worth the time and money spent.
Sometimes I crave for the feeling of suspense and being at the edge of my seat. That’s when I watch a movie from my other favorite genre: action. It’s movies like the Mission: Impossible series or the comic book remakes like Batman and Spiderman that lead the way for me. I’ll be a happy person if you give me a scene where something is blown up.
Another element I love in action movies is when time is a factor. I love the suspense when the good guys are only given a certain amount of time before a bomb explodes or before they kill the hostages. These include movies like “Speed” and “Air Force One.”
By looking at the list of movies I’ve mentioned, it may seem that I am easily amused. I, however, am not. I draw the line on war movies and I hate chick flicks. There is only one chick flick that I don’t mind watching and that is “Serendipity.” Its funny and unique plot separates it from other chick flicks. Besides this romantic comedy, the others are just too boring and always put me right to sleep.
I also despise the clichés in teen flicks like “She’s All That,” “Clueless” or “10 Things I Hate About You.” What’s even worse than that is when the writers of these teen flicks make new teen movies that resemble the old ones, like the new movie “Stick It” which is written by the same people who wrote “Bring it On.”
These movies are all too similar and unexciting. We don’t have enough time in our lives to do everything we want. So why waste the time we’re given by watching these mind-numbingly boring movies.
I think I’ll just stick to my “laugh out loud” comedies or my “too suspenseful I can’t breathe” action movies. They never get old.
