On March 5, United Hermanos painted the Rock in honor of Women’s Heritage Month.
This was United Hermanos’ first Rock painting since it was founded a year ago by Mario Rodriguez, a graduate student at the University of La Verne.
He started the group because he said he didn’t quite fit in with the other fraternities on campus.
Rodriguez also wanted to create to an organization that promoted male leadership and unity on ULV’s predominantly female campus.
The organization also seeks to be a social environment where men can learn about and appreciate their cultures, traditions and histories, and a forum in which members can educated people about issues facing men and the public at large.
The Rock painting is just one of the outgrowths of that mission.
“I felt it was important to do the Rock painting to recognize the community since the campus is predominately women,” Rodriguez said.
This month is a nationwide recognition of all the contributions to society that have been made by American women.
“As a male group, we wanted to ensure that we do something special to recognize the other sex at ULV,” said Matt White, a sophomore public administration major.
The Campus Activities Board has several upcoming events throughout the month for Women’s Heritage Month.
In Leo’s Den, men and women are encouraged to come and enjoy live music, massages and a spoken word artist.
“As a freshman, it was important for me to be involved in the rock painting not only for my United Hermanos, but also to celebrate the Women’s Heritage Month,” said Roddy Cobb Jr., a sociology major.
