Once again University of La Verne journalism students have distinguished themselves in the national arena.
This time seven students were honored with Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle Awards for work published in the Campus Times and La Verne Magazine in the 2006-2007 school year.
Based at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious collegiate journalism associations.
Editorial cartoonist and senior Matt Hill was recognized in three different categories:
He received first place in the Magazine Cartoon category; he won third place in the Editorial Cartoon category.
He also won a certificate of merit for his cartoon portfolio of work.
Former Campus Times photo editor and senior Kelly Rivas took both third place and a certificate of merit for Single Sports Photograph published in the Campus Times. Alumni Angie Gangi, Morgan Dobis and Sergio Sandoval were awarded a certificate of merit for Single Subject Presentation.
Katherine Hillier, former La Verne Magazine editor, also was given a certificate of merit for her Non-Fiction Column.
“It’s great to be recognized by those we admire most – journalists,” said Hillier, who graduated in May 2007.
“It’s nice that individual writers, editors and photographers are recognized for their accomplishments,” said Elizabeth Zwerling, associate professor of journalism and Campus Times chief adviser.
“Since we are a small college competing against major national universities, this recognition means a lot,” Zwerling said.
Earlier this year the the Campus Times won its 12th consecutive Gold Medal award from the CSPA.
Unlike the Gold Circle awards, which look at individual entries, the Gold Medal is awarded for the newspaper’s overall quality taking into account, among other things, depth and breadth of coverage, quality of writing, headlines, editing, design and photography.
