Parents Weekend kicks off at LV

Parents Weekend 2008 was a great start to a new ULV tradition.

First stop at Parents Weekend was the registration table.

My parents and I were met by smiling faces, and we were handed our tickets for the day’s events.

Next stop was the parents’ question and answer session in Founders Hall.

A table at the door of the auditorium offered brochures and flyers as well as a sign-in sheet.

The session working in accordance with the office on multicultural studies was put on as part of the first generation student success program.

“I felt good about it,” Daniel Loera, multicultural affairs director, said.

Loera, along with Patti Nonemaker, an academic adviser, and Xochitl Martinez, director of student accounts, ran the session.

Alumni were also involved and were available to answer questions the parents or students in attendance had.

“I had a lot of questions about January term,” Amanda Nova, a freshman undeclared major, said. Nova and her mother said they found the session helpful.

With close to 25 in attendance, parents and students were given the opportunity to ask questions and address concerns about ULV.

Loera said he felt it turned out well and that he hopes to continue the sessions in future homecoming weekends.

“I definitely believe we’ll be continuing Parents Weekend,” Malissa Hernandez, alumni relations and special events coordinator, said.

More than 500 students, parents and alumni attended Saturday’s Homecoming events and activities, which all had much to offer.

With the city of La Verne street fair at the east end of the University of La Verne campus and the Homecoming Street Fair on Third Street, the day was festive and inviting to both new and seasoned attendees.

After the parent session, lunch was ready.

Served in Fasnacht Court outside Founders Hall, the buffet style picnic lunch consisted of everything from hot dogs to beef sandwiches and was finished off with orange and green coordinated desserts and pumpkin cheesecake.

My mom and dad and I sat to enjoy our lunch. We found a table partly in the shade and another student and her grandparents soon joined us.

ULV truly is a place of community.

We all chatted as if we were good friends and said our goodbyes after we finished eating.

Visiting the city’s street fair was next on the agenda before heading off to the Homecoming game.

A scarecrow contest on the west side of the street fair with several scarecrows displayed for judging drew many over to vote for their chance to win several different prizes.

After walking around the street fair we headed to our final stop; the Homecoming game.

We were each handed a green ribbon in remembrance of Ortmayer, which added to the day’s events.

Though we did not make it through the entire day, we enjoyed our day at Parents Weekend.
