Softball earns split with Pomona-Pitzer

The Leopards were back in action Saturday at Wheeler Park in La Verne, as they took on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in a doubleheader.

The first of the two games was all La Verne as they looked unstoppable on offense, cruising to an easy 11-1 victory over the Sagehens.

They could not complete the sweep as Pomona-Pitzer shut out the Leopards, 3-0, in the series finale.

After giving up an early run in the first inning, the Leopards quickly took the lead back, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first inning.

After taking the lead, La Verne looking was looking very sound on defense and offense.

They never looked back, building their lead in the bottom of the third with a two run base hit from Kari Granger and a Tara Allis two-run home run to take a 6-1 lead.

La Verne stayed consistent on defense holding the Sagehens scoreless through three straight innings with a strong pitching performance from Delaney Baylor.

They cemented their convincing victory by opening up the bottom of the fourth with an early RBI from Daryn Schively

“I think offensively we hit well when runners were in scoring position and defensively we’re doing a good job” said Schively.

A big three-run home run from Granger put the game out of reach, increasing the lead to 11-1.

“I felt like I was going to hit a home run today and I did, which helps my confidence. The overall feel of the team is up and the morale is up, which helps us as a team.” Granger said.

With a 10–run lead, the Leopards forced a mercy, ending the first game after five innings.

“I was super happy about our performance, pitching did really well and the hitters were on fire. I couldn’t be happier with our offense and defense” head coach Julie Smith said.

The second game was very different as Pomona-Pitzer was able to salvage the series by capitalizing on La Verne errors, scoring three unearned runs late in the game.

Unable to get anything going offensively, the Sagehens held on to shut out the Leopards, 3-0, resulting in a series split.

La Verne, 5-4 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play, will be back in action Saturday at Redlands starting at noon.
