An event on September 17 was dedicated to the one thing young men like more than food: free food.
More than 60 attended the University’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity event dubbed Wing It, held in Sneaky Park.
The event was catered by Buffalo Wild Wings.
Phi Delta Theta Vice President Alan Hernandez said that he hoped that this event would serve as an ice breaker to those interested in joining a fraternity on campus.
“It was a good atmosphere for everyone to talk,” said Josh Della’rocco, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
“It allows people to ask any last minute questions,” Hernandez said.
Wing It was one of the many events of fall Rush Week in which both fraternities were hoping to get some new faces to join their clubs.
The other events included bowling, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon house barbecue and broom ball.
The fraternities knew it was going to be a challenge to get a large class of pledges because freshmen are not allowed to pledge until spring semester.
“Freshman can’t rush until they have 12 units,” junior member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Corey Teter said.
With a smaller number to reach out to, Hernandez knew that every interested person mattered and planning for this week started over summer.
He said it was up to him to promote Greek life and make something happen for both fraternities.
“The only way (is to have) an event like this to just get them in the door,” Hernandez said.
For last week’s event, Hernandez and his crew ordered 1,000 wings.
“The wings were gone in 10 minutes,” said Paul Gamst, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon member. “We do events like this to show people that frats aren’t bad, and they are lots of fun,” Hernandez said.
Members of both fraternities are looking forward to spring, when they expect a larger group of new pledges.
And as for Wing It?
“Overall, it was a very successful night,” Gamst said. “It was a lot of fun.”
