This January will mark the ninth year Kenneth Scambray, professor of English, travels to Italy with University of La Verne students for his Italy Experience class.
Eighteen students will be joining Scambray on his annual trip to Italy for 15 days during January Interterm.
“It is not just a travel class,” Scambray said. “It is an academic class.”
Scambray described his course as a multicultural, as well as an academic experience for students.
“We began with our classes in the spring,” Scambray said.
Classes met twice a week starting in March of the previous year.
“I want them to reflect on their own identities,” Scambray said of what he expects his students to take from the trip.
“Students turn in a travel book at the end of the trip,” Scambray said.
“I want them to have a deeper understanding of the cross-cultural experience,” he added.
“My specialty is Italian-American culture,” Scambray, an Italian citizen, said. “My current book is on Italian immigration and the West.”
“My specialty in Italian studies requires that I maintain a close association with contemporary Italian society,” he said. “I can’t just be a tourist in Italy.”
English 366 is the longest-running January Interterm travel class at ULV.
“I am the sole director of the trip,” Scambray said. “I organize every aspect of the trip.”
The trip costs $2,900 and includes airfare, meals and hotel accommodations.
Other January Interterm trips include travel to Italy, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Greece and India.
