After having the first game of the series cancelled on Friday, the Leopards took on Cal Lutheran for a doubleheader Saturday at Ben Hines Field. La Verne won both games by scores of 7-5 and 8-0.
In game one, it was 3-3 going into the bottom of the eighth. Jason Munoz had an RBI base hit to bring the score to 4-3. The bases were loaded when Sergio Munoz hit a triple down the left field line to bring the score to 7-3 going into the ninth inning. The Kingsmen tried to come back in the top of the ninth with two runs to bring the score to 7-5 and only one out.
Junior Sean Fasig came in to pitch and struck out the last two batters to end the game.
“We get them on, get them over, and get them in,” Fasig said. “That’s what we do. But, we always have room to get better.”
“We played a first place team, we had to get momentum because the first game is the most important,” senior Sergio Munoz said.
In game two, starting pitcher Matt Baudino threw a complete game, striking out 10 batters while shutting out the Kingsmen with an 8-0 victory. He held the them to only four hits.
“It felt good, I am happy with my performance,” Baudino said. “We need to build off of this win.”
In the bottom of the first, the Leopards started the game with a two run lead with RBI base hits by Sergio Munoz and sophomore outfielder Cody Hazel.
In the bottom of the fifth, La Verne scored two more runs with a sacrifice fly by Joe Buckley to score Jason Munoz. La Verne scored two more runs in the seventh, along with two more runs in the eighth to end the game with a victory.
“This is a pretty important weekend for everyone,” head coach Scott Winterburn said. “We got deep into their pen today, to get two wins today is huge.”
La Verne closed out the series with a sweep on Monday at Cal Lutheran. The final score was 10-7.
La Verne is in second place with a SCIAC record of 11-4 and 16-10 overall.
The Leopards next game will be today at 3 p.m. against Caltech at Ben Hines Field.
