Students showcased their musical talents during an April 21 recital in Morgan Auditorium presented by music professors Carol Stephenson and Grace Xia Zhao.

Piano students played pieces by Chopin and Bach, while vocal students’ selections ranged from Emily Bass’ rendition of “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands” to Paige Bradley’s “Amazing Grace.”

“I wasn’t really nervous until I walked up on stage and saw the audience,” said senior music major Nicee Gonzalez.

“I’ve performed in recitals before, so I’m not as nervous anymore.”

Gonzalez, who sang, “Du bits die Ruh” in German thinks Stephenson chose this particular song to challenge her.

The student singers ranged from soprano down to baritone. Marge Moh-Wei Chen accompanied the students on the piano.

Students were allowed to select the pieces they were to perform allowing them a variety of songs to pick from.

Soprano Amanda Novoa sang two songs, the first a more formal song, “The Cherry Tree.”

The crowd became more involved as the tempo changed and she performed her second piece, “Preguntale a las Estrellas,” entirely in Spanish.

Although the auditorium was far from a full house, the performers were just as nervous as if they were performing for a full house.

The audience was very supportive, and as each performer walked on the stage the cheers of encouragement gave the students an extra boost to do their best.

“Hearing them play songs I’m familiar with makes me want to go back to playing the piano,” Andrea Swann, senior criminology major, said.

Ava Jahanvash, ASULV vice president, attended the recital to support ULV students.

“It’s great to see classmates on stage, especially when I had no idea they were so talented,” Jahanvash said.

Music classes offered at ULV challenge students to perform in front of an audience and sing songs in languages unfamiliar to them. The recitals are an opportunity for students to show off their talents and hard work.
