Stüssy clothing was brought to the University of La Verne Dec. 1 in the West Dining Room as an outlet sale to raise funds for the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
The event allowed students the chance to find some quality clothing for affordable prices.
The sale included both men’s and women’s clothing for wholesale prices. The clothing was overstocked or from past seasons, and included designers Paul Frank, Boneyards and Undefeated.
Stüssy is a clothing brand created in the early ’80s by Shawn Stüssy ,who has a passion for surfing and surfboard designing.
His passion for surfing led to the creation of a clothing line for surf wear and now delves into the street and hip-hop scene.
Spencer Contreras, junior business administration major, has been a member of Phi Delta Theta for two years and is currently on CAB as major events co-chair.
Since there was a commuter day event, Contreras decided to have the fundraiser on the same day to draw more attention to the fundraiser.
“I think it was a really great idea to bring Stüssy to La Verne,” Contreras said. “There was a great turnout of La Verne students.”
Contreras came up with the idea of a Stüssy outlet sale after one of his fraternity brothers gave him the contact information for one of the Stüssy employees.
“The chapter is always looking for more ways to raise money for our philanthropy, events and national organization,” Contreras said. “The money will go towards chapter insurance, future events and the ALS Foundation.”
Students were not only shopping for themselves, but were shopping for Christmas presents for their friends and family as well.
“This is a great opportunity to shop for gifts for my sorority sisters and family,” Jasmine Suarez, junior psychology major, said.
There were many styles and sizes for a range of people to enjoy no matter what fashion trend they follow.
Crazy fonts and random designs splashed on snapback hats, beanies, scarfs, T-shirts and other winter clothes embody the style of the line.
One such shirt had the Stüssy logo randomly placed then a design of a lion in green, yellow and red, and on the back read the phrase “knowledge is king.”
“I came to support my fellow Greeks and show my encouragement for Greek unity,” Suarez said. “And to scope out what’s on fire.”
Not too many La Verne students had heard of Stüssy before this event, so it was also good publicity for the brand and stores.
“They have a lot of different clothes for going out and comfy clothes to lounge in,” senior legal studies major Kristina Granados said.
“They have a lot of nice clothes, and it’s on the cheaper side so it makes it easier for college students to buy new clothes for themselves,” Granados said.
Contreras generated publicity for the event by creating an event on Facebook and inviting La Verne students.
Contreras also made small flyers and handed them out to students two weeks prior to the event.
Word of mouth by the members of the fraternity through Facebook statuses and face-to-face encounters also helped get the word and excitement across campus.
Many students attended and contributed to the fundraiser, which made it an overall success. The event was also successful for those in attendance who scored new clothes at a bargain price.
