With smoothie names like Hawaiian Breeze and Maui Sunset, the University of La Verne welcomed students on Commuter Day April 12 at the University Mall.
The Campus Activities Board puts on this event every semester to make commuters feel like part of the La Verne community.
“It is centered on commuters, but non-commuters can also get the free food if they want,” Spencer Contreras, CAB major events co-chairman, said.
From 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Maui Wowi, a Los Angeles based coffee and smoothie truck provided free smoothies, as well as coffee drinks.
“They’re delicious,” Karina Balmaceda, sophomore business major, said. “It’s really nice to have this before class.”
Davenport Dining Hall also participated in Commuter Day by providing free lunch for commuters.
Music filled Davenport and CAB members gave away cotton candy, as well as goody bags with sweets and key chains.
During lunch time, Cypher Circle gave a break dance performance and freshman Christopher De Belen performed a freestyle rap.
Cypher Circle was also part of the club fair that took place in the President’s Dining Room.
The fair included nine clubs that had activities and giveaways for students.
Phi Sigma Sigma had a small game of basketball to promote their basketball tournament that took place Wednesday.
The Muslim Student Association provided students with Middle Eastern pastries and wrote visitor’s names in Arabic.
“It was nice seeing all the organizations come together,” Heather Sheridan, senior business major, said.
The last event of Commuter Day included sprinkles and free ice cream at the Campus Center.
“It’s been really fun,” Sheridan, a commuter for four years, said.
Throughout the day, commuters felt part of La Verne and were able to participate in a variety of activities with their non-commuting friends.
“It’s nice to have a day dedicated to us,” Laura Tijerina, a freshman commuter from West Covina, said.
