Leo Safe app bolsters security

The Campus Safety department launched its new Leo Safe app this summer with the goal of providing students and community members with a convenient safety resource that they could find at the tips of their fingers.

The all-new app offers several features including: emergency contact information, crime statistics, daily crime logs, annual security reports, direct dials, emergency resources, parking and transportation information, a campus map, a ULV alert system with the ability to text students and a quick way to report suspicious behaviors or individuals directly to Campus Safety.

“It was purely from research that I had been doing and I saw an opportunity to advance more of our work towards greater campus safety and security,” said Director of Campus Safety Stanley Skipworth.

The campus safety staff has added several new security measures to the campus over the summer as well, such as new video surveillance cameras and a bike library where students can check out bikes and bike locks promoting bike safety on campus.

They have also spent time refreshing their training in fields such as emergency preparedness, CPR and first aid.

The Leo Safe app is a fresh way for Campus Safety to communicate and receive information with and from students.

“I think we’re going to continue to provide information in an entirely different manner that has a variety of different resources built into that information,” Skipworth said.

“So you and I might use the app for different reasons to look up different information or different resources.”

The Leo Safe app can be downloaded for free through iTunes or Google Play for iOS or Android-based devices.
