Four fashionistas wearing black dresses accented with pink boas stood behind a pink table with pink cupcakes, pink cake pops and more pink desserts Wednesday.

The event, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, was the first campus event put on by the LaVogue campus fashion blog and club, intended to raise funds and awareness of the disease.

The event, inspired by the movie “Mean Girls,” was called “#OnWednesdaysWeWearPink.”

“LaVogue is a fashion blog, but we try to emphasize not one fashion but all fashions,” said Vanessa Canales, senior history major and LaVogue treasurer. “Since we started this blog, we have seen people’s confidence grow.”

Students gathered around the table grabbing pink desserts and Starbucks coffee.

All of the refreshments were free, but the table had an open jar for donations that would be donated toward funding breast cancer research.

“Almost everyone has had someone in their life who has been affected by cancer, and it’s important for everyone to help and donate,” said Alina Rozwadowska, president of LaVogue and senior international business and Spanish major.

“This campus is big on philanthropy and we wanted our first event to support that too,” Canales said.  “We want to show the campus that we can all come together for a cause.”

Students who showed up dressed in pink were photographed and were showcased on LaVogue’s social media pages, which include a Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr.

“I actually follow them on Instagram and thought it was important to come to an event like this,” said Lizeth Calbario, sophomore biology major.  “As a science major, I think there is a lot of technology out there and it’s good to see there are people supporting the research.”

“It’s important to support, because you never know when cancer is going to affect you and they are going to be the ones helping you out,” Claudia Martinez, senior kinesiology major, said.

In all, the event raised $120.

Canales and Rozwadowska said they plan to hold two more philanthropic events this semester.
