Over the past few months, Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has positioned herself as an advocate for gender equality.
After being appointed as the United Nations Women’s Goodwill Ambassador and presenting a speech launching her HeForShe campaign, Watson received a threat from an unknown 4chan user claiming she would be the next target of the celebrity nude photo leak.
The threat was posted to the same board where the other celebrity photos leaked.
The 4chan user also released a Web page with a countdown to the day that her photos would supposedly leak.
The threat turned out to be a hoax posted by Rantic, a fake company, which claims to have been hired to shut down 4chan. Even if this was an empty threat, it is still an appalling attack that should be taken seriously.
While this turned out to be a ruse put on by a company to get more attention, it is important to note some of the misogynistic comments that it elicited.
One user commented, “It is real and going to happen this weekend. That feminist bitch Emma is going to show the world she is as much of a whore as any woman.”
Rather than learn from her campaign, where Watson explicitly stated men and women must work together to eliminate the “us vs. them,” “man-hating” mentality that is associated with the feminist movement, these users showed they were set in their misogynistic ways.
In her speech Watson speaks directly to men explaining that gender equality is their issue too.
“We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes, but I can see that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence,” Watson said in her speech.
We applaud her for her efforts and courage and hope that users opposing this movement won’t stand in her way.
