ASULV finally speaks up

Last week the Board of Trustees approved a 4.9 percent increase in tuition for the 2015-2016 school year. Tuition will rise from $36,744 per year to $38,560 per year.

Tuition increase is inevitable, but this year, the Associated Students of the University of La Verne’s open protest against it was not. In fact, their response was quite surprising.

Throughout the past weeks, ASULV has held booths, handed out informational flyers and even created a hashtag, #TuitionTalksTFTI, to get students fired up about the increase and to contribute to the conversation.

In an open letter to students posted on Twitter, ASULV stated that even after “hours of questions” following a meeting with administrators presenting their reasoning behind the increase, ASULV still disapproved the decision.

The University is 98 percent student-funded, but ASULV says the tuition increase had 0 percent student input. In the past ASULV has not done much to really speak out against this administrative decision. Some ASULV presidents have even gone on record saying that tuition increase is a good thing.

No student wants a tuition increase if there are no visible improvements that come from it. ASULV is supposed to represent the student body. When they were going around in previous years saying that tuition increase is a good thing, then that is going against what most of the student body is thinking.

It’s about time that our student representatives took a real stand against something no student wants. Such demonstration – and transparency – are effective ways to get the student body informed and caring about the situation. It’s unknown yet whether ASULV’s efforts will make a difference with administration, but for now it’s comforting to know that this is the year when our representatives use their power and influence on our behalf.
