Spirit of love takes over Leo Park

Glittered red cutout hearts, fresh flowers and live music filled Leo Park as students gathered under the shade of the trees to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere and create flower bouquets and Valentine’s Day crafts at the Love Is In The Air event Feb. 12.

Campus Activities Board hosted the event and the live music was by musician Wil Kinky. CAB also gave out free Jersey Mike’s sandwiches. The purpose of the event was to get students in the Valentine’s Day spirit.

Even though CAB hosted similar Valentine’s craft making events before, this was the first year live music was performed.

At Leo Park, there were long tables filled with bouquets of roses and daisies and various craft making materials.

CAB provided the materials, including scissors, glue, paper, markers, tissue papers in various colors, scrapbook materials and more.

Kerri-Anne Nicole Whiting, senior music and psychology major and CAB concert chairwoman, planned the event.

“We have to throw events every month, so I wanted to theme one around love,” Whiting said. “I wanted to give students a chance to make cards for their valentines because we’re all broke college students.”

Jessica Oleas, sophomore music major, initially heard about the event from her sorority sister.
Although she only had a short amount of time to create her Valentine’s card before her next class, she still attended the event to support her friends.

“I’m here to support the cabbies because I know a lot of them and they mean a lot to me,” Oleas said.

Oleas enjoyed the event’s atmosphere the most.

“I love it, it’s very creative,” Oleas said. “I love the environment, getting to enjoy the blue sky and the music.”

CAB adviser Angie Anderson also attended the event and created her own card along with the students.

“I like the creativity, especially when themed about love,” Anderson said. “Students seem to enjoy making Valentine’s Day cards.”

Although Whiting planned the event, she also enjoyed it.

“My favorite part is how relaxing the environment is and watching everyone enjoy what I created,” Whiting said.
